The Virgin Voyage

We never did post the final version of the project we did last semester. Here it is. It does not have alot of the sound effects or Music yet. Scott and I think the students did a great job!

All the students in our class are extremely talented. Alot of them are out on the job hunt. Maybe someone out there needs some animators... Feel free to contact us regarding any of the work and we will put you in touch with the student or students who did the work. You can email us at gordo@splinedoctors.com or clark@splinedoctors.com

Link to Virgin Voyage

(remember to right click in safari. It may come in as a text file.)
if it does download as a text file, remove the .txt from the end of the file and it should play fine in quicktime.

The synch is way off, way too far off to be intentional. I think the file itself might have a problem, because I can't reproduce it with any other files on my machine. Anyone else having that problem?

God bless using mouth shapes!

Thanks for posting the movie. The animation is excellent as usual. I want to be brutally honest and say that the story\material is not very inspiring or funny. Thanks again.

Thanks for posting this for us Andrew. I'm very excited with this first experiment of "Improvimation", where the story came from getting improvisational actors together. I'm more than impressed with the work the students have done in a matter of one semester (15 weeks)!

For any of my students that read this please know that I consider the work you've done to be more interesting than a lot of the studio work being doe these days.

Thanks for the hard work. Andrew and I really appreciate it. Great job!

can't believe this is improv voice acting and for the students to make up a story to animate to is just unbelievable. lots of great animation. wish more schools would do this kind of project. this short is a lot better than most on cgtalk, 3dtotal etc...

the story kind of fall short. any plans on continuing the story?

thanks for posting

I thought lipsync was off on some of the shots while it was fine on some others.

physical actions were probably the best ive seen in a while cmoing out of any school, there were minor stuff that needed tweeking but overall it was animated very well.

Hi, just wanted to say how much this blog inspires me! The animation on Virgin Voyage is awesome, and it's great to see the animators get credit for all the extra stuff they did. The thumbnails on the main page are even appealing; very beautiful to look at!

That was very entertaining. :) The story does feel improvised and a bit too random, but very entertaining nonetheless. :)
Awesome job on the animation and acting too. :D Really enjoyed the whole thing. :)

I think the initial idea of animating an improv scene was a good idea ... however, it does feel like they're strecthing it a bit. Seeing how much the students contribute to the film, why not have them brainstorm an idea/;story and THEN have the improv actors act it out? This would probably give the story a little more "meat." Other than that, the animation is sweet ... along with everything else contributed by the students. Running the class in this sense makes a whole lot of sense and seems like a blast. Not to pick favorites, but Keko's shot was fantastic! Great work, man ... (and the rest as well). Please take my suggestion to heart, docs. =)

Uh... where's the sex room? I was told there was a sex room here. Wait... it's an animation?! I thought there was a sex room!

Well, fun animation anyway. No... great animation! Just got a little confused.

Yeah, the story continues. Think of it as a prequel to this one. Looks really interesting with three different scenes in this short. Sorry if I let the cat out of the bag early but I couldn't contain myself. Very exciting stuff!

VERY nice work! :)

"How's the vector on the , uhh,
X-coordinates?"
-fantastic, subtle bit of acting there... sweet!
And I love the business of the captain keeling over, beautiful shot!
Great work all around, guys!

yeah! really cool! i like your camera a lot! especially when the captain dies and the camera moved back and changed focus. but one thing i don't like is the abrubt end. taking some frames more for giving the audience a bit more time to realise what tony said at last would work better in my opion. but what do i know?! well done and thank you!

Great work -- near the end, that's the finest martini sip I've ever seen. And the struggle is staged perfectly.

As far as the story not being totally cohesive: I think all it would've needed were little signs from the begninning that the officer was feeling imbalanced; as it is, his later choices seem unmotivated. But that's easy to fix with a little character-foreshadowing.
