Sack, Sack and more Sacks....
I challenged my class at CCA to take a piece of music and animate flour sacks to it... If they wanted to they could also pick a favorite sequence from a film they love and animate it with flour sacks. The purpose of the assignment is to explore staging, acting, cutting and most of all, Straight Ahead style animation. Here are a few of the Sack tests the students did...

looks good, some of them seemed to use the flour sack more as a magic carpet ala aladdin (empty sack), but still good stuff. what are they animating in/with?
some of them looked digital, if so what program, and are the other guys scanning stuff in or what?

Its all being done with a program called TVPAINT. Yes, some of the sacks could use a little more volume change... I agree.

I would suggest TV Paint users to download Chad's Tablet PC tool bar from the TV Paint forum but also the Traditool toolbar I just updated http://www.tvpaint.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2088

Very fun idea and got some good results . I love the idea of animating to music . Do they break it down to something equivalent to "bar sheets" or just sort of generally try to match the tempo or the feel of the music ?
I'm also a big fan of the TVP Animation app because of the variety of line styles possible ... you can get a dense black ink line which looks like the typical Flash brush tool , or very fine thin, sketchy pencil lines, Big THICK grease pencil or 6B pencil Glen Keane lines, depending on what you feel like.

I have to download them with Firefox. With Safari I just get a page of code. Maybe one of my settings is off?
It's a great exercise, and some nice, loose animation on display. Good job to all the students!
I wonder if you mean some of the sacks could use a little more shape change, not volume change, since the volume should be pretty consistent. Or maybe just that some of the students needed to keep their sacks more half to 3/4 full, instead of so empty.
Anyway, I now have the urge to do some dancing flour sacks . . .

Those are quite charming. THey do seem a bit long for an aniamtion class assignment. Not that they are bad for their length, but that there might be other issues that merit some of the time these occupied. Or maybe these were acoomplishe din less time than I can imagine.

I disagree that these assignments are too long. I think they make the student learn alot of things and are also useful for getting them involved with a story. I was hired at Warner Bros based on an assignment just like this. They originally had 3 weeks but I gave them and extra week becasue they needed it.

i'm currently a student at academy of art and i was just wondering what the new curriculum is over at cca. before i started going to aau i heard about how cca was starting an animation program but wasn't much interested because of it's newness. so if you could give a little insight about it that would be great!

The software looks similar to Macromedia Flash. I wish I could have tried it that way when I was doin 2d in S. Clark & Pete Nash's class. Maybe I will animate a sack in flash for fun and post it on my doodles blog:)
